Autumn Term News - Maple

Maple enjoyed a change of themes to classes in December. On the 1st of December students walked in to a decorated school, with evidence of busy little elves all over!

In class, they enjoyed decorating gingerbread, with some of the sweets not quite managing to end up on the biscuits. There was a Christmas theme to the sensory workout too, with all the usual theme music replaced with Christmas songs. Hands were warmed up to “Jingle Bell Rock”, “All I want for Christmas” was our mirror music and bubbles were blown to “Let it Snow”! We changed the tastes and smells used on alternate days to be themed – would you prefer to have horseradish or cranberry sauce at 9.30 in the morning? Our sensory trays were filled with baubles, flavoured ice cubes and sensory cloud dough scented with different festive aromas. We also made some extra decorations together which filled our class windows.

We had three Christmas themed trips in December, to get us well and truly in the mood. Students helped us choose and wrap presents for each other on a festive shopping trip to Taunton. We enjoyed listening to carols in a special lunchtime service at church, especially as we were able to have a dance too. The “Christmassy Christmas Show” was the best addition, one day before the end of term, full of puppets, magic and a few sprouts.

At the end of term, Maple class sold their Christmas table decorations, which had been made during their enterprise lessons. Proceeds from this and their next project will go towards some more sensory equipment for class that all students can enjoy. December also saw the launch of our new sensory story, Alice in Wonderland. Students will continue to explore sensory items from this theme until February half term and have already shown excellent anticipation of different events in the story.

On 29th June, Ben will attempt to complete 200 consecutive seat drops to raise money for the Elmwood and Penrose Federation. Here you can see him complete 10 (and one for luck) as an example of the challenge he will be taking on.
